Wigram's Kingsford Smith landing site at Wigram.

"THEY CAME ON THE WINGS OF THE MORNING"

On Bennington Way amid the new Wigram housing development in Christchurch NZ is a memorial to the arrival of the Southern Cross on 11th September 1928.

Above is the 50th anniversary commemorative plaque which is located about where the lower photograph was taken from.
With thanks to Bargeld01.

  1. Very good to see that the developers have the committment to recognise the history of that land.
My Grandfather flew one of the Bristol Fighters in the flight that went out and met the Southern Cross that day. He served in WW1 at Gallopoli then in the RFC whereas a Camel pilot he was show down and became POW. Between the wars he served in the NZPAF and served in the RNAZF during WW2. His name William (Bill) Leonard Harrison.
