The North Shore Aero Club's Great Northern Air Race departed from North Shore Airfield this morning. The race will travel through Whakatane to Hastings on Day 1, from Hastings through Wanganui to Taupo on Day 2 and return from Taupo to North Shore Airfield on Day 3 (which is Auckland Anniversary Day).
The field was down in numbers over previous years, but 10 aircraft are taking part, five from North Shore and five visiting aircraft. Here are some of the field lined up in front of the Aero Club before the race got underway.
The race participants in order of leaving were:
Vans RV 6A ZK-RFX from Hamilton.
Cessna TR 182 ZK-MAS from Hamilton.
Beech 76 Duchess ZK-CGW from North Shore.
Vans RV 7 ZK-NVS from North Shore.
Piper PA 44-180 Seminole from Whenuapai.
Cessna 172M ZK-JGP from Hamilton.

And last off was Piper PA 28-161 Warrior ZK-KAT from North Shore.
I hope the weather will be OK for them.
