Douglas C124C Globemaster II 52-1038 (c/n 43947) trundled into Wellington Airport and parked over between the terminal and the crash fire building.
Photographer now unknow, but I have had these pics for over twenty yeasr and just dug them out from the bottom of one of the shoe boxes marked "misc photos".
I do know that it went down to The Ice during the 1960 ODF season.
But I think the cars in the park post date that year. I'm thinking mid to late 1960's would fit !
I like the "No Step" stencil on the blades.
Looking at the cars, I believe I see a Vauxhall Velox PB, Mk IV Zephyr, and Chrysper Valiant AP. These put it at 1962 at the earliest.ReplyDelete
I was looking at the Triumph 2000.ReplyDelete
Mk-4 zephyr built between 1967-1971ReplyDelete
Yes, thought I saw that too.ReplyDelete
Did a bit more Googling, and found that MATS didn't become MAC until January 1966. I also noticed the nosegear doors say 61st MAW. According to Wikipedia 61st Air Base Wing operated between 1966 and 1969
These are great records of the visit. And back in those days, what has turned out as "the archive photographers" could get better access to the aeroplanes and apron thus keeping all of the good details for us to marvel over in the our "more modern days".ReplyDelete
