The interesting Siemens Schuckert D IV replica ZK-SSW was displayed at the NZ Warbirds' Warbirds on Parade open day at Ardmore yesterday. Errol Cavit took this photo of it out in the sun.
This replica was built using modern construction methods by Carl Swanson of Wisconsin, US in 1982, Carl was a prolific builder of replica WW 1 aircraft. It is powered by a Gnome Monosoupape rotary engine (which is not the Siemens Halske rotary engine that powered the original aircraft). It did fly briefly in the US as N1094G but has been displayed in various museums before being purchased by NZ Warbirds in 2019 to add to their growing WW 1 aircraft collection.
ZK-SSW (c/n C-10) was registered here on 11/12/19, mistakenly as a Fokker D IV. It will be great to see it flying!
