Militaria and Aviation Extravaganza
This event is now on 22-23 October 2022
Labour Weekend 2022
Saturday 22nd Oct and Sun 23rd Oct
Ashburton Airport
This event is being held over Labour Weekend and is something new to the Canterbury region.
The event is being run by Military Adventure Group (MAG) and Ashburton Aviation Museum to help the Museum raise funds for a much needed display hanger. We are hoping to encourage people to visit the Ashburton Aviation Museum to view what is an outstanding collection of Military and Non Military Aircraft and to see the amazing work this group is doing.
The display will see one of the largest presentations of military uniforms, weapons, and equipment ever assembled at one display. Dates in history ranging from the New Zealand Maori Wars through to Timor. This will be situated in the Superhangar generously provide for use by the museum.
Outside the Superhangar situated around the close proximity of the airfield will be living history displays from various units, additional aircraft, food vendors. Entertainment will include brass and pipe bands, highland dancers, and 1940s swing dancers. Be careful they may get you up to have a try.
Additionally there will be military vehicles on display giving people a very rare opportunity to get up close to vehicles that actually served in conflicts. For the very brave there will be military vehicle rides.
For those who may have family items that they would like more information on, suggestions on how to protect and display them, or advice on where to go to research family military history members of our team will be more than happy to take some time to talk with you. Every piece of history we save is a win for us and every person who served is significant to us.
Anyone wishing to bring in a weapon must book this in with the event Armourer, noel@mag.org.nz.
The display will also see the participation from other groups who in there own way help to preserve New Zealand history and culture. These include exhibits from the Christchurch War Gaming Club, the International Plastic Modelling Society, the Vintage Machinery Club, and hopefully the Vintage Car Club.
The New Zealand Cadet Forces will be attending with skills presentations and assisting with the opening ceremony. This is a great opportunity for young people and their families see what these wonderful corps have to offer young people.
If there are other organisations who would like to exhibit or be involved please feel free to contact one of the Museum people.
The Museum also has a limited number of com-mercial spaces available.
Get in behind this event and support the museum by renting one for the weekend.
It is our hope that we create something that will grow and get people visiting Ashburton every second year.
So from all of us involved in getting this off the ground we invite all of you to enjoy the Militaria and Aviation Extravaganza with us.
