Last night's Seven Sharp programme on TV 1 featured a video on Vans RV 12 ZK-MBA which has been built by students of Mercury Bay Area School at Whitianga over the last 2 years, and which has recently been registered and now test-flown as shown on the video. In the video, the presenters wonder if this is the first plane built by students at a college in New Zealand. Well the answer to that one is no, as at least 2 other aircraft have been built by college students that I know of.
The first was TEAM Hi Max ZK-JDW which was built by students of Rangi Ruru Girls School of Christchurch, and was first registered in October 1996.
And the second is Light Miniature Aircraft LMA-5X-W ZK-OHS, a full size wooden Piper Cub replica which was built by students of Otamatea High School of Maungataroto and was first registered in October 2010.
There may have been others - can anyone advise?
