Strangers at Rangiora 03-02-2009

This Cessna 172M ZK-JSG (c/n 60913) was tied town at Rangiora this afternoon.
It is a 1972 creation which was imported in a damaged condition for a rebuild by Aeromotive and was registered to J S Gemell of Auckland on 13-01-1988. In April 1990 it was listed to G A Lovegrove before moving over to the Hauraki Aero Club from 16-07-1990. It has been with the Nelson Aero Club since 18-05-07. I note that it has a tow hook.
A first sighting for me is this local Christchurch De Havilland Tiger Moth ZK-BLM (c/n DHNZ164). Built by the DHNZ factory at Rongotai it went to the RNZAF as NZ1484 in April of 1944 and joined the civil register on 22-05-1955 as ZK-BLM with R G Bush of Bush Aviation in the ag role. It had a wire strike near Alexandra on 28-01-1956 but I believe continued work until it was cancelled about 1960. It was stored at various sites over the years until rebuilt (and correct me if I am wrong) by the late Ray Goulden to rejoin the register on 05-09-2007 with Claymore Ltd of Christchurch. Above we see Pat Scotter about to flick it into life.
Also on the tie downs was this Cessna 180 ZK-BJX (c/n 31417). A Rural Aviation import first listed on 18-04-1955. It was delivered to Barr Brothers. Now some six owners later it it registered to Sam Stephenson originally at Blenheim but now of Christchurch.

  2. Old JSG is a nice plane to fly! Yeah you can't look to close at the paint. Its going back to its owner in a few days. Should have left the Nelson Aero Club titles on for a few more days for the picture

  4. The Tiger shown here is of course ZK-BLM. ZK-BJM was a Fieldair/Airland Lodestar, now long dead.
What is the relationship between ZK-BLM shown here and the Tiger airframe of allegedly the same ID still at Ray Richardson's Gore Air Force Museum?

  5. Hi there flyernzl.
Bit of finger trouble there with BLM/BJM. Even my usual proof read failed to spot that. Tks.

Not certain of the pedigree. Its listed as c/n DHNZ164 on CAA web site. Obviously an itsy bitzer, as I believe parts of BLM went to CCH in early 60's; that it was also said to be on display in the Yaldhurst Museum about 1968 & that parts of AJL and BJK have been included in the latest re-build.
    Can you add anything ??
And what has happened to AJL?

  6. I visited the 'Gore Air Force Museum' in January 2008 - after ZK-BLM reappeared. The Tiger was there, marked as NZ1484.

I have ZK-AJL as "To Yaldhurst Museum, Christchurch; sold to Peter Harris, rebuild by Hawkes Bay Aviation Ltd. at Bridge Pa".
Maybe they found a different set of log books.
    Curious!
