Noted for sale in the rain at Dennis Thompson's, Ardmore yesterday was DHC-1 Chipmunk Mk 22 ZK-JIT (c/n C1-0640), for sale for $99,950. It does not appear to have been noted on this blog previously.
This aircraft was delivered to the RAF on16-05-1962 16-05-1952 as WK627 and it is still painted in its original RAF colours. It was struck off charge at No 5 Maintenance Unit at Kemble 05-12-1974 and was registered as G-BCSU with Sky Trade (International) Ltd, Rush Green. UK. Its UK registration was cancelled on 21-04-1975 and it was registered as ZS-JIT to Ralph Saxe of Springs, South Africa 08-01-1976. It was last flown in SA on 08-06-1986.
It was shipped to New Zealand in 1995 but its South African registration was not cancelled until 07-12-2000. Finally it was registered in New Zealand as ZK-JIT on 29-05-2001 to the Chipleigh Trust of Palmerston North, who are now selling the aircraft. It first flew here on 22-06-2002 at Palmerston North.
Tragically, Ralph Saxe was killed in the crash of his Yak 52TW ZK-YTW at Feilding in January 2012 and I think the Chipmunk has not been used much since then.
