Question time # 175 resolved.

 Updated 21-11-2014. 1700hrs.
From the depths of Jean210's shoebox comes this fabulous photograph of the De Havilland DH98 FBVI Mosquito N9909F taken at Whiteman Field.
This is better known to us as ZK-BCV. These markings are still visible on the fuselage side.

Only two replies to the question time. The first was a bit left of centre.

The second reply was from Handbag who got the first two words of his reply in the wrong order.

Handbag said :-

Is it de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito PZ474/NZ2384/ZK-BCV/N9909F?

IT IS.

This aircraft was inducted into the RNZAF in March of 1948 and after disposal entered the NZ civil register as ZK-BCV on 12-09-1953 for Aircraft Supplies Ltd at Palmerston North.
It was ferried from Palmerston North to Whenuapai on 10-03-1955, then on to Nadi on the 11th. On the 14th its NZ registration was cancelled.
It hopped over to Canton and to Honolulu on the 16th.
In due course it became N9909F with Insurance Finance Corporation at Studio City, California in August of 1956.
Its US history is somewhat vague to me - but.
It was damaged in a taxying incident and remained derelict. (date unknown).
The Planes of Fame Museum at Whiteman Airpark had it for some time.
As did Jim Merizan of Placentia, California.
Last I heard it was under restoration (in the USA ?) for the Flygvapen Museum in Sweden.

A more informative history of this airframe can be found on the great Geoff Goodhall site at :-

BB - the machine's history is a bit vague to all! A swap to the Flygvapen Museum never seemed to be completed (I emailed them asking and they said they didn't have a Mossie in their collection, no reply from emailing Jim Merizan) and it remained in open storage at Chino. Earlier this year it was sold to an American collector and shipped to Ardmore for AvSpecs to work their magic on it. Good news!
