Jodel D.11 ZK-DYB has a new owner.

After all these years - Graham French has sold his Jodel D.11 ZK-DBY (c/n AACA/181).
It was registered to Graham at Tauranga on 16-12-1977.
I noted it at Hawera on 02-09-79.
Then at Pudding Hill on 25-01-81.

Above: at the Rangiora fly in on 19-02-93.

Three recent shots of ZK-DBY.
Above at Tauranga on 18-06-2013.
Below at its new home at Paraparaumu.
Both shots from Tony Quayle.
Below a view of Tony flying at Tauranga taken by Adele Hickford on 18-07-2013.
Not the added airbrakes on the lower fuselage between the undercarriage legs.
After a satisfactory test flight - a pre purchase inspection was carried out by Colin Alexander on 08-07-2013 and the sale was clinched on the 9th with the paper work dealt with on the 15th.
Also on the 15th, Tony did his type rating with Phil Hooker.
With  the sale of DYB to Tony - Graham is left with his Zenith CH200 T/D ZK-FRV2 and the Asso V project.

Kapiti Districts Aero Club

Tony Quayle has sent in this view of the fastest and the slowest aircraft that attended the opening of the new facility for the Kapiti Districts Aero Club at Paraparaumu last Saturday.
The Jodel ZK-DYB is c/n AACA/181 which Tony acquired in July last year.

Jodel D 11's of New Zealand (3)

XXX

ZK-DGV (c/n AACA/129) was built by AH (Les) Hartshorn, on the second floor of the Odlins building in downtown Wellington, where Les worked.  It had the Odlins logo on the forward fuselage.  It was first registered on 13/12/73 and its first flight was on 22/6/74 at Wellington.  It was powered by an O 200 engine.  The above photo was taken at Wellington Airport around the time of its first flight.

And the above colour photo was taken by Don Noble on 24/5/76, at Dairy Flat.   On 30/11/77 it was sold to KW Sample of Kawerau, and then on to IG and FE Williams of Auckland on 30/5/79.  It was then withdrawn from use in 1980 to add wing tanks, modify the engine cowlings and to enlarge the baggage area, and it fell off the radar for many years.

It was sold into the Taranaki area, with ownership transferring to NC Dickinson of Stratford on 14/11/98 but it didn't see the light of day until after it was sold to S Barham and R Drew of New Plymouth on 20/6/01.  They finished the rebuild over more than 10 years and ZK-DGV flew again at Stratford on 10/9/11, an amazing 31 years after it was withdrawn from use!  It is photo'd above at Stratford by Nick Furnage.

ZK-DJQ (c/;n AACA/152) was built by Hal Roadley of Maungataroto and was first registered on16/2/78.  It is fitted with drag flaps.  It is photo'd above at the 1982 AACA flyin at Taupo.

It has spent all of its life in the Northland area, being sold to GN Johnston, JD McKay, WE Rossiter and BJ Kyte of Whagarei on 12/1/84.  It is photo'd here at the 1987 AACA flyin at Omaka.

It was sold to DB Hill of Ruakaka on 17/3/93 and to BS and G Taylor of Whagarei on 24/8/99.  It hit a cow on landing at Glenbervie on 30/9/01 and the wing was torn off..  It was rebuilt and painted with a small cow "kill" on the fuselage and it is now named "Playstation".  It is photo'd above at Dargaville in 2003 after its rebuild.
ZK-DYB (c/n AACA/181/1) was built at Tauranga by Graham French, and was first registered on 16/12/77.  It is photo'd here early on in its life at Wanganui, however I do not have a record of who took the photo.

And here it is in colour at the 1981 AACA flyin at Mt Hutt.  ZK-DYB has had a very stable life - it was owned by Graham French for many years until he sold it to AM Quayle of Pukerua Bay on 15/7/13.

Taildragger Day at Hastings last Sunday.

Tony Quayle popped over to Hasting from Paraparaumu for a brief visit in his Jodel D.11 ZK-DYB on Sunday 07-09-2014 for the Taildragger fly-in at Hastings and sent in this pic.
Looks like a nice day.

Foxpine AOPA Flyin Today 7-6-2020

If any evidence was needed that the sport flying community was bursting to fly to a flyin, the answer was given today when 51 aircraft showed up for a fairly short notice flyin at Foxpine Aerodrome organised by the owners.

Jordan Elvy was there and here are some of his photos:

Locally based Thatcher CX 4 ZK-TCX has not been featured on the blog since 2012, but is obviously still looking good and presumably is airworthy.

John Luff probably had the fastest en route time to Foxpine in his Glasair SH-2 taildragger ZK-JDL, coming from Wanganui.  And the Stratford crew can be seen in the background.

Maxair Drifter ZK-XPA was down from Feilding.

Tecnam Astore ZK-AST2 now comes from Paraparaumu.

As does Alpi Pioneer ZK-PJM2

and also a couple of Jodel D 11s:  ZK-DYB,

and ZK-ECU.

Stinson 108-2 Voyager ZK-VGR came from Hastings

And there were a couple of De Havilland's finest there also:  DH 82A Tiger Moth ZK-BMY from Palmerston North, and DH 60G Gipsy Moth ZK-ADT from Hastings.

Thanks very much for the photos Jordan.

A Jolly of Jodels at Paraparaumu 4-8-2020

The population of Jodel D 11s at Paraparaumu has recently increased to 3 aircraft with the recent arrival of ZK-KSD to join ZK-DYB and ZK-ECU.

Tim Gorman was invited along to photograph the three of them together.  Maybe I am biased but I reckon these older types of homebuilt aircraft have character as they are all the same but different.  Surprisingly to me, we still have 29 Jodel D 11s registered plus one D 112, but I don't think that many of them are active.

Thanks for the use of the photo Tim.

Feilding on 20-10-2018

Allan Wooller has been on the prowl and visited Feilding on Saturday the 20-10-2018 and offers these pics for you.
One tidy looking Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub ZK-BRY (c/n 18-5687) as listed with B B Aviation of Feilding.
It has been mentioned previously Here
I fondly recall the days when it was our tow plane at German Hill.
The Taranaki Gliding Club sold it in mid-1996 and purchased the Piper PA25-235 Pawnee ZK-RWS (c/n 25-2161) as seen below at Feilding, also last Saturday.
The "RWS" registration was in memory of a Club stalwart Bob Struthers.
The Club sold it in February 2015 to Craig Hunter of Napier.
It still carries 'Super Grunt' on it modified fin.
Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP ZK-CBM2 (c/n 172S10184) was a B B Aviation Ltd import in July last year and was placed with Action Aviation Ltd of Rotorua in February this year.
ZK-DYB is the Jodel D.11 (c/n AACA/181 as completed by Graham French in late 1977.
It was sold to Tony Quayle of Pukerua Bay in July of 2013.
It has had several previous mentions HERE
Below - yet another import by B B Aviation Ltd is this Cirrus Design SR22 ZK-LDY (c/n 0895) which went to Brian Bourdot of Auckland in late September of 2015.
The Piper PA-34-220T Seneca III ZK-UPX was c/n 34-8133184.
It spent some twenty five years in Australia as VH-JGW, VH-SKJ2, and VH-JAQ before flying into Auckland on 30-07-2007 for listing with Peter Upton on 06-12-2007.
It went on line with the Auckland Aero Club (Inc) from September of 2008 and then back to Peter in March of 2009.
It was listed for sale with Dennis Thompson International Ltd in 2009 ending up with Helipro Aviation Training Ltd of Paraparaumu/Palmerston North in 2012.
Roc On Aviation Ltd took it over from 16-05-2016 and they withdrawn it and cancelled it on 05-07-2016.
It carries 'Bay Flight Tauranga City Airport' script on the fuselage side.

Paraparaumu Airport 20-12-2013

Paraparaumu Airport is undergoing major changes, with commercial development encroaching on the airfield.  The hangars that were alongside the main road to the beach have been demolished and the Aero Club hangar is being re-located to the seaward side of the airfield, near to the old CAA hangar which is presumably now owned by Helipro.  However, air2there still operates from the site near the control tower mound.

air2there C 208B Grand Caravan ZK-MYH was awaiting passengers while their Navajo ZK-WHW was covered in the background.  You don't often see an aircraft as big as a Navajo covered - maybe it has a leak?

Because of the demolition of the hangars a lot of aircraft are picketed outside as in this view.

The now locally owned Vans RV 6 ZK-RVK was doing circuits and later parked in front of the Helipro hangar.  Piper Cub ZK-BOY is in the background of this shot, with huge tyres.

And it took off later - those tyres sure look ungainly!

Other sport aircraft in the Helipro hangar were 2 locally owned Jodel D 11s: ZK-DYB and ZK-ECU, and the Lower Hutt owned Vans RV 7A ZK-MIS.

Feilding Dawn Raid 9-6-2019

Feilding Aerodrome hosted their dawn flyin this morning and there were more than 40 visiting and local aircraft on the field.  Jordan Elvy has posted a great selection of photos on Facebook, and I thought the following were of particular interest:

Tecnam P 92 Taildragger ZK-TBJ was up from the deep South, I would guess on a demonstration tour?

Along with its stablemate P 92 Eaglet ZK-TNZ2.

If the Tecnams were the newest, then a couple of Jodels would have to be among the oldest - the 1985 registered D 9 ZK-FLI built by Rob Gentry, which has been owned by Ron Day of Otane since 8/6/18.

And the 1977 registered D 11 ZK-DYB built by Graham French, which has been owned by AM Quayle of Pukerua bay since 2/8/13.  (But I would think that Jodels were of particular interest!).
