A Surprise Late Arrival at Kaipara Flats Last Evening 4-1-2022

I was out at Kaipara Flats airfield around 7 pm last night to go for a flight in my Jodel D9 (it was as smooth as silk up there), when I heard a radial engine growl that morphed into the Cessna 195 ZK-AZK2 which landed on Runway 07 (which is good because you have the late low sun behind you as you are on finals):

About to make a text book touchdown.

And roll out with long shadows.

It turned out to be Trevor Hall who bases his aircraft at Te Kuiti.  He was on his way from Whangarei to Te Kuiti when he experienced a bit of rough running so he made a precautionary landing to carry out running repairs.  We were able to put him and his friend up in the aero club clubhouse for the night.

What a neat old aeroplane!  I had a sit in it and it felt a bit reminiscent of an early 1950s American car, including a wind down side window with a window winder!
