Ardmore 14 April 2009

Ardmore Flying School's two most recent arrivals have undergone pre delivery work with Flightline having arrived via container just over a week ago. ZK-TAD/2, ex N5083E, and ZK-TAG, ex N5055U, are pictured here having yet to undertake their first flight in NZ.

Carrying out a maintenance test flight was Finlayson Helicopters Bell 206L-3 Longranger ZK-ISF. I've not come across the Whangarei based machine before. This is one of 8 Longrangers currently residing on the NZ register however I believe 1, ZK-ICV, is still flying in Australia.

Rangiora Easter Monday

A few passing through and returning home from Omaka. Tiger Moth BRL, Fox Moth ADI, Spartan ABK, Chipmunks CVM and ARL. XL750 JZI arrived from Hamilton and Fielding on it's way south to Queenstown for operations with NZONE Skydiving.

Question time #41 resolved

cessna185 is close enough with his answer.
Above photo shows the near complete unit, but alas with nothing against which to compare its size (or lack of).
As you can determine from the pic below it is a RR 250-C20R/2 (SP) [out of a MD500N].
The (SP) infers it has the Ceco fuel pump.

Originally a development from the Allison Engine Company in the early 60's. Allison was acquired by Rolls Royce in 1995.

Coast Air & ZK-NDY

The new "Coast Air" service is under way with the arrival of their Cessna 404 Titan Ambassador 111 ZK-NDY , c/n 404-0693 , at Westport this morning after a trip across the Southern Alps from Christchurch. I believe that Hokitika was also visited; not sure about Greymouth though. It now carries Coast Air titles on its nose and a Kea apon its tail.

Final Permutation of ZK-C,W and O (There is no ZK-OWC)

Following on from my last post on the many variations of registrations of ZK-C,W and O, and Blue Bus's post on the original ZK-COW, I thought I would complete the permutations by posting ZK-CWO. This was the first Bushby Midget Mustang in New Zealand (c/n AACA 22/1) and was registered to Harold Blair of Wellington on 2/68. This was a very advanced homebuilt for its time and probably would have been the first all metal homebuilt in New Zealand.

Unfortunately ZK-CWO came to an untimely end when it crashed on its first flight from Paraparaumu airport in December 1972. Mr Blair had invited quite a lot of his friends to watch his first flight, and the ensuing crash landing featured prominently in the newpapers of the day. I understand that on take off problems occurred when he ran through some puddles on the runway, and the plane crash landed just off the airport in some lupins in the sand dunes. Mr Blair was not hurt but the plane was badly damaged. It was cancelled in 8/76.

I was a member of the Wellington chapter of the Amatuer Aircraft Constructors Association at the time, and from what I saw the aircraft was well built, as Mr Blair was a panelbeater and used to working with metal. The aircraft also had a nice colour scheme of 2 tone metallic blue which you will have to imagine from the photo. It also had wheel spats when it crashed.

Does anyone out there have a better photo of ZK-CWO? If so I would love a copy.

Gone offshore.

Pacific Aerospace 750XL ZK-JIF c/n 153, registered to PAC on 04-02-09, pictured here under construction at Hamilton on 23-02-09 was cancelled from the NZ register on 27-03-09 to become VH-YIF with Australian Air Ferry.

A second 750XL was cancelled during March. ZK-JDQ2 c/n 139 first listed to PAC on 12-02-08 and transferred to GoSky AG on 18-04-2008. It trundled off across the ditch from Hamilton to Auckland to Lord Howe Island on 22-04-2008. To the Gold Coast on the 23rd and to Darwin on the 24th. Its ZK registration was cancelled on 18-03-09. From this I assume that the European certification has come to pass. Anybody know what its new registration is ?
Polikarpov I-16 Type 24 Rata ZK-JIN c/n 2421319 (the one coded "Red 9") was cancelled on March 12th as exported having joined the Alpine Fighter Collection on 09-10-1997. Anyone know where it's gone ? The above pic at Wanaka on 08-10-08.
Built by Brian Horne from a kit obtained in 1993, this Lycoming IO-360 powered Stoddard-Hamilton SH-2 Glasair Super 11 FT ZK-REH c/n 2138 was registered on 26-02-2002 and first flew that September.
It ferried out of Kerikeri for Norfolk Island on 23-02-09, to Lord Howe Island on the 24th and from Coolangatta to Perth on the 25th. Cancelled on 06-03-09 it became VH-PND on 16-03-09 and is listed to Famdenz Pty Ltd and operated by Alfred Tucker
With the personalised registration of ZK-RFN this Mooney M2oC Mk21 , c/n M20C-2184, was registered to Richard F Neave of Auckland on 06-03-1987. After a rebuild it first flew here on 24-04-1988. Wellington Aero Club took it on from 16-09-1997. It was flown from Wellington to Kaitaia, to Norfolk Island and Coolangatta on 03-03-2007. Ownership passed to Stephen Ritchie of Lower Hutt on 13-03-08. It has been parked up aat Murwillumbah for some time. Its ZK registration was cancelled on 18-03-2009.

Out in the pasture

During a session of maintenance at West Melton Victa Airtourer ZK-COW was found to have a dose of corrosion. Removal of the fuselage and top wing skin showed that it was beyond economical repair.
Pic above at West Melton on 22-09-95.
The aircraft later went to Gerald Rhodes and was moved to his Transport Mooseum at Wanaka where it is on display minus some panels (as a holy cow). Pic 30-03-02.
And I can't resist adding this pic of the Piper PA22/20 ZK-PAT2. [Wonder if it has been beefed up ?]

Now, I am about to heard off to the udder coast for work for the next few days, where I really do have a cow of a job to undertake.

Rotary cow.

Mr Minty prompted a quick trip to the shoe box. I was hoping to do this with gliders but "VI" has not been allocated; so settled for using helicopters.
Above is JetRanger ZK-HBO2 with Kaikoura Helicopters
Then we have R44 Raven 11 ZK-HVI2 with Helipark at Tuatapere.
And a bunch on ZK-HNE's.
Above JetRanger ZK-HNE1 with Helicopters (NZ) Ltd.
Below is BK117 ZK-HNE2
with Garden City Helicopters.
And below AS 350B3 ZK-HNE3 of Helicopters (NZ) Ltd at Queenstown.
And what's this all got to do with anything ?
Well BO, VI & NE = BOVINE.
Can ewe spot the misteak ?

ANZES partially open day at Christchurch

An alternative day for Blue Bus today with a visit to the ANZES semi open day (for staff, friends and family). Somehow I managed to get in and I met a couple of the P&W engine staff wearing their protective clothing.
Then I stumbled across this large object. Let it be know that it is almost a first for me today. I actually photographed an aircraft larger than, and weighing more than a DC-3. I even managed a walk through the cattle class section. [Which sort of leads up to the previous & probably the next blog]. This is B747 ZK-NBU, c/n 25605, which has been on line with ANZ since September of 1992.
I managed a slightly better shot of the Friendship ZK-BXH today. According to "The Man" the only thing stopping it from flying are the "O" rings. Hmm !
Also noted in the Hangar was Airbus A310 ZK-OJI. B737 ZK-NGR, Hercules LC130 "3300", Cessna 172 ZK-EXE, Cessna A152 ZK-FSL, Dragonfly ZK-PJM, Varieze ZK-ZAP, Yak-55 ZK-JPO, Cessna 172RG ZK-NAC, PA-28's ZK-LJE and LJJ, R44 ZK-ITZ, Airtrainer ZK-JMF, Partinavia ZK-TZZ, with F27 ZK-BXH, B747 ZK-NGU & DC-3 ZK-AMY outside. [AMY selling rides].
