Fifty years ago today 09-08-1960
Fifty years ago today the Auster J-1 Autocrat ZK-AUX joined the New Zealand Civil Aircraft Register.
Manufactured by the Auster Aircraft Ltd at Rearsby with the Britannia Works, at Thurmaston, Leicester mailing address was the Auster V Series J-1, c/n 1994 . This was listed as G-AHHE on 09-04-1946 for delivery to Temple Press Ltd at Croydon.
Temple Press being the publishers of the Aeroplane Magazine at that time. The "Aeroplane" script was carried on the Auster at this stage.
On 16-05-1946 it was re-registered with the personalised registration of G-AERO. During its time with the Aeroplane Magazine it became noted for its landing aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious on 16-10-1946. It also landed aboard the HMCS Magnificent on 05-05-1948.
It was sold to the aircraft broker W S Shackleton Ltd on 05-05-1950 and was cancelled from the UK register on 17-07-1950 as exported to New Zealand.
ZK-AUX was sold to Eric Moffat (a well respected aircraft engineer) of Timaru on 10-05-1976 who passed it on to Brian Curtiss and Gary Chiplin on 08-02-1978, (both moving on to microlights later). It was back with Eric Moffat that August. Marty Lucas of Kaitangata entered the scene on 26-07-1979, and it was at about this time that the name "South Wind" appeared on the aircraft. [The name Auster comes from Roman mythology as the cold, cloud and damp fog bearing southerly wind from the Mediterranean Sea].

It became ZK-AUX on 09-08-1950 for Wally Harding of Wanganui, receiving its CofA on 18-10-1950. Title changed to Wanganui Aero Work Ltd on 21-11-1950. I believe it carrieds the word "Aero" during this period.
On 11-08-1962 it was relisted to Peter Holthouse who farmed in the South Makara Valley near Wellington and it was seen often at Paraparaumu whilst Peter pursued his gliding activities. (Peter operated the K6's ZK-GCH, GEV and GFO, plus the Cobra GHZ and the Hornet GJD in the mid 60's to late 80's period)

On 01-02-1982 the "South Wind" had reached Masterton for Arthur Myers and John Shakes. Arthur released the aircraft to the N Z Vintage Aero Club Inc of Hobsonville on 23-01-1987. It underwent a lengthy CofA during 1989-1990 after which it was Hamilton based.

Unfortunately it was damaged at Mangatawhiri, near Mercer. on 16-01-2000, with the registration being cancelled on 04-09-2001.
I would imagine the bones of ZK-AUX are stored awaiting restoration ??

UPDATE : Finally cancelled Auster J5B ZK-AYN
UPDATE on yesterdays post on the cancellation of the Auster J-5B Autocar ZK-AYN.
Steve Lowe has sent me the following magnificent photograph and memory of the Auster J-5B Autocar ZK-AYN.
"Colin Sutherland took me for a flight in his Auster to check out some aerial spraying work he was going to do for the NZ Forest Service".

Question time # 108 resolved
Anonymous has scored again.
The answer is indeed the Fletcher FU24-950 ZK-DEM.
ZK-DEM was c/n 165 and was listed to Air Parts (NZ) Ltd of Hamilton on 27-01-1971 with its first flight being logged on 12-05-1971.
I captured it three times, firstly at Hamilton on 27-05-1971 with streamlined spay bar under the wings and pump beneath fuselage.
I then noted it at Wellington on 16-06-1971 minus the spray gear.
Many light aircraft that were to be ferried overseas called into Wellington Airport in the 60/s & 70's to visit Aviation Radio, who were based in the Government hangar, for the installation of HF radios. So I presume that was the reasom ZK-DEM was in windy Wellington.
The aircraft left NZ on 08-09-1971 and was noted in Singapore on the 12th, on its way to India.
It departed Madras on 14-12-1973 heading back this way. The following day it had a forced landing at Can Tho, South Vietnam. I don't recall the reason but it it reached the Can Tho airfield it could easily have landed across the black top. Can Tho being a very large ex US air base in the Mekong Delta.
Its NZ registration was cancelled on 14-02-1974 for it to become VH-ENI with Goulburn Air Services Ltd at Goulburn, NSW.
It was acquired by Airpasture of Scone on 13-12-1996 and then by Universal Tracking Systems of Belmont, West Australia on 16-04-1997.
It was landed in the sea off Tavoy Island, Myanmar and was cancelled on 10-05-2002.

Even more on Beaver ZK-CTJ.
More details of Beaver ZK-CTJ, and also Beaver ZK-CYD c/n 1615, have been sent to me by Falcon123.
Falcon123 advises that 5Y-AIV (ex ZK-CYD) and 5Y-AIW (ex ZK-CTJ) were first noted as such on the Western apron at Wellington on 25-03-1969.
Both were flown from Wellington to Auckland (with possible stops in between) on 28-05-1969.
Both departed Auckland for Norfolk Island and Brisbane on 29-05-1969.
For more pics of these two (and many more NZ aircraft) go to http://www.kiwibeavers.com/
You will find a list of NZ Beavers down the left hand side of the header page.
Also note the pending Lawson Field reunion.
Thanks to Falcon123 and Graeme Mills (Kiwibeaver).

Finally cancelled. Auster J5B ZK-AYN.
Austers come in many models which seem to confuse the great unwashed.
The Auster J-5B Autocar is one of the easier models to recognise.
They are four seaters built along the conventional tube and rag theme like most of its Auster predecessors.
It has the enlarged horn balanced rudder and a domed cabin roof with fuel tanks in the wing roots and powered by the 130hp Gipsy Major 1 engine. The prototype first flew in August of 1949 just in time for the 1949 SBAC Farnborough Air Show.
Eighty of this model were manufactured with c/n 2943 coming to NZ to become ZK-AYN on 15-11-1951 for the NZ agents, British Aircraft Ltd. It got its C of A on 22-11-1951 and went to H B Newton who traded as Bay of Plenty Air Services Ltd. In early March of 1954 it joined the New Plymouth Aero Club with whom it underwent a rebuild in 1960. It then went into private ownership, firstly with R W Bell of Puniho in March of 1961 and then to G E Jamieson of Culverden mid 1963. Barry Cowley and Colin Sutherland, first of Rangiora, took it over on 05-08-1976, and then from Gisborne from 14-09-1981. By March of 1986 Colin Sutherland had it at Rotorua trading as White Island Airways. As I understand it - it was dismantled for rebuild in about 1987; went to Gerald Rhodes of Christchurch in April of 1991 and then to Des Lines of Swannanoa in March of 1998. I believe it has not flown since the mid 1980's, but I am willing to be advised otherwise. Its registration has now been cancelled. It is still in storage along with two other Austers and a Travel Air 4000.

The fixed gear demonstrator ZK-DYZ , c/n DY146/2006 , belonging to the agent Drake Aviation was with the retractable geared ZK-EWW , c/n DY057/2004 , which belongs to Kevin Slattery of Rangiora. This aircraft had new generation wings retrofitted at the manufacturers factory during 2008. These have the extra fuel tanks fitted in each wing, giving a total of 125 litres, or six hours endurance. Also has the new wing tips.

Helicorp's EC120 ZK-IGE has featured on this blog previously however since the last sighting it now sports titles.

AS350B ZK-HKQ/3 alighted at Oceania. This machine has been on the books with them since March 2009, see www.nzcivair.blogspot.com/2009/03/others-at-ardmore.html
It now wears a rather bland scheme from the one it was delivered in!

AS350B3 ZK-IKJ was outside Eurocopter and features Treetop titles on the doors, difficult to see from this angle.

King Air C90GTi ZK-MMM, as blogged just a couple of days ago, arrived into Ardmore just on 2pm today from its Nelson home. Interestingly it was towed from the end of the runway to the Hawker Pacific hanger.
