ZK-BNO Piper Cub

Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub ZK-BNO (c/n 18-5253) appeared under Airwork (NZ) Ltds name on 10-10-1956. Gained its NZ CofA on 29-11-1956 and was listed with D W Kain of Raes Junction on 21-12-1956. It was transferred to the Canterbury Aero Club on 20-06-1961.
My first recording of BNO was outside the Canterbury Aero Club hangar at Christchurch on 26-08-1964.

It is seen above at Manuka Point around about 1965. Photo is from the Grant Porter collection.

It departed the Club in November of 1974 to go to R B Johnston of Orakei and then on to J W Guiness of Tauranga from 28-04-1978.
By late November of 1979 it was with G W Adamson of Manakaiaua (South of Fox Glacier) replacing the Champion 7ECA Citabria ZK-CPD which he had in partnership with D G Lewis. The photo below shows it at Manakaiaua on 29-12-1979.
 I like the tail graphics.
Bob Jelly and D MacMillan of Mosgiel appear on the paperwork from 19-04-1982 and then J H Richardson of Feilding from 12-04-1984. In Mid January 1990 it moved up to Whenuapai for the RNZAF Base Auckland Aviation Sports Club (Inc) and then to the RNZAF Aviation Sports Club (Gliding Section) on 19-08-1996.
It overturned during a down wind landing at Whenuapai on 13-10-2001 and was cancelled on 26-04-2002.

  2. BNO towed me on my first Glider solo, and was based at Hobsonville for most of the early 90's.

  3. This was my grandfathers plane (DW Kain) I have the owners handbook for it. Is it going to be repaired or has it been scrapped for parts?

  4. It was sold to the USA from what I understand.
I did many hours towing gliders with this at Hobsonville.

  5. Clearing out old documents I found airframe logbook #5 and #2 engine logbook for ZK-BNO.
If someone knows who owns it now (presumably in the USA) I will attempt to get the logs to the owner.
