Corby JAM

The date was 11-11-1995.
The aircraft is Corby CJ-1 Starlet ZK-JAM (c/n AACA/774)
Its details appear in earlier posts.
The pilot is Grant Benns - owner at the time.
The photo were taken from a Piper Cub being flown by Andrew Phillpotts.
The camera person is thought to have been Wayne Edwards.
Nice.

And this shot is taken near Motuoruhi Island (Goat Island) off Coromandel.

Yak 52 ZK-YXO at Thames 14-3-2016

On my way back from Whitianga last Monday evening I came across the locally owned Yak 52 ZK-YXO (c/n 877413) about to head up for some aerobatics.  It has been here in New Zealand since April 2004 and is an ex Ukrainian Air Force machine.

Typical Vedeneyev MP 14 start up.

The aircraft now has a 3 bladed prop and spinner.

Oh All Right Then! It Wasn't Ardmore in 1935!

Discerning readers of this blog may have noted that the photo I "came across" recently did in fact have some contradictions in the details.  And as some have observantly commented, hydraulic scissor lifts weren't around then (or were they?).

So I have to come clean - the photo was in fact taken at Ardmore on Monday when filming for the documentary film on Jean Batten was in progress.  I was not allowed to photograph the filming (fair enough), but I could take photos of a couple of aircraft that are involved in the film.

Jan and Jerry Chisum's Gipsy Moth ZK-ADT has been authentically painted up as G-AARB, which was the aircraft that Jean Batten used for her 1934 record flight from England to Australia of 14 days and 22 hours.

I find it strange that although so much effort has been put in to repainting the fuselage so authentically, it still has ZK-ADT plastered across the upper and lower wings.  maybe it is something to do with the legality of flying the aircraft in New Zealand?

And another aircraft appearing in the film is Tiger Moth ZK-BFF.  It has had the ' Foxy Lady" logo removed from the rudder but retains the registration on the sides - again maybe something to do with flying legally?

I think that possibly the film makers can digitise the registrations out during the production of the film, which they will need to do as I understand that the film is set in Australia.

There are at least another two local aircraft in the film, being Stan and Gilly Smith's Dragon ZK-AXI and Guy Clapshaw's Percival Proctor 1 ZK-DPP2 which is a fair imitation of a Percival Gull Six (also flown by Jean Batten and the original of which, G-APDR, is hanging in the International Terminal of Auckland Airport).

Filming has also been carried out at Thames (with many locals in the crowd scenes) and at Kaipara Flats airfield.

Watch out for the film on TV, maybe in a Sunday night slot.

Ardmore Circa 1935?

I came across this photo the other day that looks like it could be from Ardmore around 1935 or so....

The Gipsy Moth and the Dragon were both around in the mid 1930s, and the hangar also looks to be from around that era.

Menestrel ZK-TBS at Ardmore- 14-3-2016

Steve Chilcott was out flying at Ardmore on Monday in his new Nicollier HN 700 Menestrel II ZK-TBS.  This is the first time I have seen it flying.  A nice looking aircraft.

Ardmore Carbon Cub Clarification

On my way to Whitianga yesterday I called into Ardmore (as you do) and sighted the Carbon Cub floatplane that is in the Avspecs hangar.

It is in fact N47MV (c/n CC11-00258) that is on amphibious floats and is normally carried on the sloop rigged superyacht M5 (ie it has a huge mast - in fact it is the largest single mast yacht ever built) that was previously the Mirabella 5.  Have a squizz at: http://www.superyachtworld.com/yachts/m5-exclusive-ron-holland-airplane-largest-sloop-7285

It is at Avspecs for maintenance.

Two New RV 12 First Flights at Whitianga Today 14-2-2016

Last weekend I heard that two newly registered Vans RV 12s were scheduled for CAA inspection and test flying at Whitianga today.  A quick check confirmed that this was the case so as it was a nice day I headed across to Whitianga.

Alan Coubray taxies in in Allan Kearney's Class 2 Microlight RV 12 ZK-ERV.

Followed by Jim Evans in his factory built LSA certified RV 12 ZK-LSV.

Screamin Eagle

I posted the pic in the link below back last November but got no feed back.

Below is another shot taken at Wanaka on 13-11-2015 showing the Aero L29 'Viper' being prepared for its NZ CofA.
This is c/n 395190, ex Czech Air Force and ex N2039S.
It was registered as ZK-WBD on 07-03-2016 to Jetflights Wanaka Ltd.

Below is a photo from 2010 of N2039S as race #11 from Mike Henniger.
Come down to Wanaka at Easter to see (and hear) it in the flesh.
