Taumaranui Airfield fuel.

The following note came my way yesterday.

PERMANENT REMOVAL OF AVIATION GAS FACILITY AT

TAUMARUNUI AIRFIELD

Z Energy has informed the Taumarunui Aero Club that it intends to remove their Aviation Gas facility at Taumarunui TM airfield by the end of March 2013.
This is the only Avgas facility on the airfield.
We believe that if this happens, not only will the Taumarunui Aero Club and the owners of private aircraft on the field be seriously affected, but General Aviation as a whole will be compromised.
For a large number of aircraft transiting the North Island, N to S and E to W, Taumarunui Airfield is the only all weather alternate / emergency airfield.

The Taumarunui Aero Club hosts many groups with aviation interests all of which use Avgas and require refueling before returning safely to their home bases. These include:

·        The NZ Tiger Moth Club

·        NZ Flying National and Regional Competitions

·        The Air Safari

·        AOPA and Sportsflying NZ fly-ins

·        Warbirds NZ

·        Cross country training flights from New Plymouth, Tauranga, Auckland, Palmerston North and Hamilton.

It is our opinion that should the Avgas facility be removed, safe GA flying through the Central North Island will be compromised.
We need your assistance to prevent this from happening by either:

1.      Writing a letter to the CEO of Z Energy, outlining your concerns and any other comments you may wish to make, or

2.      Complete and sign the attached support document with your comments and return it to us to forward on.

The CEO of Z Energy is Mike Bennetts, his address is:

Z Energy, 3 Queens Wharf Wellington, or P.O.Box 2091, Wellington 6140, or email attention Mike Bennetts at general@z.co.nz .

KEEP THE AVGAS FUEL FACILITY

AT TAUMARUNUI AIRFIELD

WE THE UNDERSIGNED BELIEVE IT IS IN THE INTEREST OF ALL GENERAL AVIATION IN NEW ZEALAND TO MAINTAIN AN AVGAS FACILITY AT TAUMARUNUI  (TM) AIRFIELD.

THE TM AIRFIELD IS THE LONGEST PUBLICLY OWNED ALL WEATHER GRASS STRIP ON THE NORTH ISLAND (1280m), AND IS GEOGRAPHICALLY SITUATED AT LEAST 25 NAUTICAL MILES FROM ANY OTHER GA AIRFIELD.

IT IS THERFORE AN IMPORTANT ALTERNATIVE / EMERGENCY LANDING AREA FOR THE CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND SUITABLE FOR MOST GA AIRCRAFT AND ALL GA AIRCRAFT WHICH USE AVGAS.

REMOVING THE AVGAS FUEL FACILITY FROM TM WILL COMPROMISE THE SAFETY OF GENERAL AVIATION FLIGHTS ACROSS THE NORTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND.
