I reckon its a C-172 tow hook for banner towing. The aircraft swoops on a ground based set-up and hooks a wire and pulls the banner into the air.
Oh dear me.I don't like that idea at all.Will give you points for trying though.
How common is this part on the aircraft
I reckon it holds the wheels up on a Lada.... whoops I mean a Yak 52.
