The Conclusion of the Bluff to Cape Reinga/North Cape Glider Flight on 11-1-2022

I have previously posted about Terry Delore's and his daughter Abbey's attempt to fly from the South to the North of New Zealand in one day back on 20/12/21, in their ASW 25M motor glider ZK-GZF.  You can see that post HERE   On that flight they had to land at Drury, short of their goal by around 350 kilometres.

However on Tuesday 11 January 2022 conditions were good and they completed the flight as posted on Facebook, where the photos are from:

And here is their track.

  1. That was a great achievement however it is not their overall goal. When chatting to Terry at Drury a few days before the Northland he confirmed that the real plan is to fly from Bluff to Cape Reinga non stop. As some of you will know, I put the idea to him back in 2005 saying that on 1 December 2008 it will be the 75th anniversary of Ted Harvie and Trevor Hunter flying a Gipsy Moth from North Cape to Bluff. Terry and his daughter Abbey have been striving to do the South North flight on several occasions. One day, they will crack it.

  2. Just been in touch with Abbey congratulating her on her involvement. She tells me she is in full training for the Coast to Coast multi sports race. On completion of that she would be the first person to have covered the entire length of New Zealand in a glider and traversed the width of the South Island. A unique experience.
