Mt Cook Skiplanes - Then and Now

A fantastic day at Mt Cook yesterday with not a cloud in the sky all day, and what views!

I thought that as I was so close to New Zealand aviation history that it would be rude not to take a few photos.

Harry Wigley's original Auster skiplane ZK-BDX is on display at the Hermitage with the Mt Cook Rolls Royce below.  This aircraft made the first landing on the Tasman glacier in 1955.

and the story of its first landing on the Tasman glacier is chronicled here (click to enlarge)

Meanwhile down at the Mount Cook airport, the modern day skiplane fleet, Turbo Porters ZK-MCT and ZK-MCN, had returned from 2019 style glacier flying.

And in celebration of Mt Cook, here she is from our hotel room with the first rays of the morning sun:

Spectacular!
