Airbus A350 trials at Wellington.

Captured today by Geoff Lloyd  was the Trent XWB powered Airbus Industrie A350 -941  F-WXWB (c/n 1) at Wellington Airport carry out wet runway trials
It is seen above taxiing back to line up for a runway 16 departure for another wet runway circuit.
Geoff says 'Quite impressive watching this thing land and take off. Probably empty but using far less runway than the old 320.'
'Fire boys had fun flooding the runway from about the 1500 to 3000 ft mark. Plenty of spray when the reverse thrust went on'.

This aircraft arrived at Wellington on the 5th. See the earlier post on our sister MRC site Here

Titan Mustangs of New Zealand (3) - Mazda Rotary Mustang

John Shuttleworth of Morrinsville built his Titan Mustang at Hamilton and powered it with a unique Mazda 13B Renesis rotary engine which produced around 200 HP.  (I have found other Mazda rotary powered Titan Mustangs on the web but John's was our only example).  John went to a tremendous amount of effort with his Mustang even to the extent that the rotary engine's exhaust was piped to the 12 exhaust stacks.  And he also put a lot of effort into the No 3 (Canterbury) TAF RNZAF colour scheme which featured exact reproduction stencilling, and it has its c/n 57 on the fin.  The aircraft was named "Miss Dixon" for John's girlfriend of the time, who later became Mrs Shuttleworth.  Mike Crene also put a lot of work into the aircraft, fettling it to more accurately represent the lines of the original Mustang

ZK-SMF (for Scale Model Fighter, c/n M05XXX5OHK0057) was first registered to John Shuttleworth's Matamata Aviation Ltd of Morrinsville on 6/8/09.  It originally had a 3 bladed propellor which appeared on the F model Mustang but I do not think the 3 bladed propellor would be representative of a RNZAF TAF Mustang?  The above photo was taken in John's hangar at Matamata aerodrome on 23/12/10.

It is photo'd here at a gathering of 5 Titan Mustangs at Matamata on 19/3/11.

I never saw John's aircraft flying but he did taxy it out for us when we called through Matamata aerodrome on 9/3/14.  By this time it had a 4 bladed MT electric constant speed prop.

Tragically, John was killed in the crash of ZK-SMF at Matamata on 18/10/16 when he suffered a power failure on take off.  The aircraft was cancelled on 21/3/17.  RIP John.

Titan Mustangs of New Zealand (2) - Suzuki Powered Mustangs

As seems to happen with aircraft (and probably more so because the Titan Mustang is a scale model fighter), there is a tendency to install more powerful engines.  And so the various builders started installing Suzuki V6 engines.  These engines have ranged between 2.5 and 2.7 litres and produce around 150 to 170 HP.  Of course, as with everything aircraft, there is a compromise and more power means more weight and so the cruise speed does not go up much over the 100 HP Rotax Mustangs, but the climb performance is improved and it is a genuine 2 seater.  But probably more importantly for a scale model fighter, they sound more the part and they can swing much bigger propellers up to 84 inch diameter, which look much more to scale.  These more powerful aircraft are registered as Amateur Built Aircraft and have a heavier MAUW.

We have had seven Suzuki powered Titan Mustangs to date as follows:

The first one was Mike Crene's lovely looking Kiwi Mustang ZK-DBG2 (c/n 044) which was first registered to him on 12/7/07.  It had a V6 Suzuki Vitara engine that produced around 170 HP and it was eventually fitted with an 84 inch Titan prop driven through an Autoflight reduction unit.  It really looked the part and in a reversal of the usual aircraft flow it was sold back to the USA.  The above photo was taken at the 2010 SAANZ flyin at Tauranga, on 5/2/10.  It was cancelled from the New Zealand register on 19/2/10 and appeared on the US register on 26/2/10 as N396LC registered to Joseph R Cram of Seattle, WA.  He owned it for a little over a year and on 16/3/11 it was cancelled from the US register and exported to Thailand where it was registered HS-MTG on 4/4/11 to Kraivuth Srinkapaibulaya with whom I believe it is still current.  You can see a photo of it as HS-MTG HERE

New Zealand Titan Aircraft agent Ivan Campbell's first Suzuki engined Mustang was ZK-MST (c/nM05XXXSOHK0060) which had a 2.5 litre Suzuki, heavier gear legs and an 82 inch prop.  It was named "Miss Torque" after the full size P 51D ZK-PLI that was operated by the Alpine Deer Group (Tim Wallis) from 1994 to 2004 and was painted in similar colours, but with the serial NZT5160 on the tail.  It is photo'd above on 2/4/10 at Omaka.  Unfortunately it suffered a drive failure on 23/8/10 near Oxford and was badly damaged in the ensuing forced landing.  It was cancelled on 22/9/10.

Peter V Walton of Manakau finished building his Titan Mustang ZK-WSV (c/n 95) at Mike Crene's Kiwi Mustangs facility at Matamata and first registered it on 19/2/09. It swung an 84 inch Titan propeller and featured the stronger gear legs and also had inner gear doors fitted.  The above photo was taken at Matamata by Mike Crene on 5/2/10.

Later Pete Walton moved to Whitianga from where he is active flying his Mustang.  It now has the name "Miss B'Havin" and has 95 on the gear covers.  It is photo'd above at the 2014 Black Sands flyin at Raglan, on 8/11/14.

Campbell Aviation Ltd built ZK-TLI (c/n 0049) for former RNZAF Air Commodore and Director General of Defence Medical Services Leonard J Thompson of Kerikeri and it was first registered on 26/11/09.  Len flew Mustangs in the 1950s for the No 4 (Otago) TAF Squadron of the RNZAF and ZK-TLI is marked as NZ2418 which was the aircraft that he flew in those days.  The blue and yellow checkers are the markings of the No 4 (otago) TAF squadron.  It is photo'd above at the 2011 SAANZ flyin at ashburton, on 6/2/11.  After being based at Kerikeri for some time, it was sold abroad to Australia as VH-MJS where it was registered to Sean J McBain of Castle Hill, NSW.  It was cancelled from the New Zealand register on 20/9/16

In Tauranga Mike Dean and Marty Cantlon built a pair of Titan Mustangs (Marty's one has a 3.5 litre Honda engine of which more about in a later post).  ZK-MJD2 (c/n M05XXX50HK0078) was registered to M J (Mike) Dean on 23/11/10 and represents the aircraft of Lt Col Tommy Hayes of the 357th Fighter Group USAAF who named his Mustang "Frenesi" (Free and Easy). You can see more details of the aircraft below - click to enlarge.  The above photo was taken inside Mike's and Marty's immaculate hangar at Tauranga, on 27/1/12.

Sometime later it was repainted with the code N-C5 which is more historically accurate, as in the above photo taken on 28/12/14.

ZK-FDL2 (c/n 83) was constructed in Auckland by Warren Sly but then transported to Whitianga when Warren moved there.  The above photo was taken at Whitianga on 14/3/16 where it can be seen that wears the colours of the No 1 (Auckland) TAF Squadron of the RNZAF.  Warren told me that it is complete but that it has not yet flown.  Warren has also manufactured various accessories for the T 51 including inner gear doors, bomb racks and gun ports.

And finally for now, our latest Suzuki powered Titan Mustang was completed by Alan M Caudwell in Nelson and registered to him as ZK-TCV (c/n 0081) on 21/7/15.  It is photo'd above at Nelson on 18/12/17.  Thanks for the photo Greybeard.

Auckland Aero Club - 90th Anniversary

The Auckland Aero Club is celebrating its 90th Anniversary this weekend with a celebratory gathering this afternoon as outlined in the flyer above.

Not sure how the weather will pan out for the aircraft activities, but late afternoon 01 June 2018 the Cessna trio took off for a quick formation practice to the southwest of Ardmore.

North Shore 1-6-2018

A trip to North Shore airfield in the sunshine this afternoon saw several aerial craft worth a photograph:

Hughes 369FF ZK-HUJ2 has been posted on this blog several times previously (try typing ZK-HUJ into the search box to see these posts), but not in the colours of Ralph Schultz Helicopters from Maungaturoto.

Rob Fry's "new" Cessna 180A ZK-FRY2 was parked out.

And Zenith CH 200 ZK-ZEN arrived from its home base of Te Kowhai.

Western Grass at Christchurch International 01-06-2018

A late morning visitation to the Western side of Christchurch Airport today (01-06-2018) produced the following items of interest.
The first three are at the Christchurch Helicopters 2001 Ltd's facility.
 The Aerospatiale AS 350 B2 Squirrel ZK-HND3 (c/n 2073) departs.
Catch the earlier posts on this airframe Here
Above. Of late 1980 vintage and previously registered here as ZK-HWW and ZK-ISS2 we see the Aerospatiale AS 350BA Squirrel ZK-IOP (c/n 1299) high tailing it northward.
It has been listed with Levo Ltd of Wanaka since only May the 3rd.
See some earlier info Here
The Guimbal Cabri G2 ZK-HZO2 (c/n 1057) arrives back from the west.
This was ZK-HCS5 in a previous life.
Parked near the Canterbury Aero Club hangar was the Cessna 172N ZK-NPF (c/n 17268293) of Helicare Services Ltd of Nelson.
With the NP* registration you would be correct in thinking that it is ex New Plymouth Aero Club.
In fact it started as ZK-EFT with the Club at New Plymouth in April of 1977 - had a bit of an incident in July of 1978 and following due care and attention came back as ZK-NPF on 11-03-1993.
The Club sold it in August 2007 to Wellton Air Ltd of Auckland who moved it on to Helicare in July of 2011.
The latest addition to the Canterbury Aero Club are two
new Piper PA-28-181 Archer TX's registered as ZK LJT and ZK-LJX on 03-05-2018.
Here we see ZK-LJX (c/n 2843919) which has initially been allocated the Piper test registration of N7115J in November last year.

Pauanui

Interesting visitors continued at Pauanui this week as the spell of fine weather lingered. These included the R44 ZK-HEW up from Tauranga

And from further afield the Wanaka based Maule M5-235C ZK-JQI en route Whitianga for the annual NZAWA fly in

Codes on Catalina 31-5-18

Consolidated Vultee PBY-5A Catalina ZK-PBY  msn CV-357 had squadron codes applied late yesterday at Ardmore

ZK-HCB the sixth

Registered to Endurance Fishing Company of Nelson back in March 2018 is this Airbus Helicopters H130 T2 ZK-HCB MSN 8429. It has been undertaking flying activities from the manufacturer's Ardmore facility so may well have not long arrived in the country.

This is the sixth use of these registration marks. It has previously been work on a Bell 47G, Bell 206L, Hughes 369E, Robinson R22 and a BK117.

Ardmore 31 May 2018
Attempt to catch ZK-HCB and Schweizer 269C-1 ZK-ICB in the same shot were sadly thwarted by timing as both were operating in the helicopter circuit simultaneously.

Thursday, 31 May 2018

A quick business trip through to Whangarei provided a brief chance to check out the activity at Onerahi airfield on Wednesday late afternoon.
Parked out next to the tower was a visitor from Tauranga, ZK-DEX/2. This worked previously as ZK-ELG until adopting its new guise in 2004.

A bit further along, the old Northland Districts Aero Club building is now the Sunair terminal. At least three of their fleet were visible, with Aztec ZK-FVP/2 being the best placed to photograph.
With previous history in both the UK and Australia, this aircraft has been in the country since 2011.

Outside the flying club hangar the local B22 Bantam 700E ZK-JJI was receiving attention, while inside the Magni Gyro M-24 Gyrocopter ZK-MWR rested.
A bit further along, the Hopper-owned  Fly Synthesis Texan  ZK-TXS/2 was parked out in the shade.

Over at Kensington Park the Air Ambulance people had the ex-Royal Jordanian Air Force Sikorsky S-76A Spirit ZK-ISJ ready to go.
(As a side note, Kensigton Park was Whanagarei's first land airfield, the centre of the racecourse there being used as such by visiting Avro 504s back in the early days).

A quick look this morning revealed Tecnam Sierra ZK-TST outside in the cold clear weather. This was the first P2002 to fly in this country, back in December 2003.
