Pauanui final report for 2016

Richard Currie has kindly sent in these four photographs taken at Pauanui on 31-12-2016.
The Classic Aviation Adventurer CA18-1530-C200 ZK-CMR (c/n PT001) was registered to Malcolm Savill of Hamilton on 10-07-2015.
Below is what the N Z Aviation News Magazine said about it at the time of its registration.
'Classic Aviation Designs Ltd (CADL) is a company that morphed out of Malcolm Savill’s Performance Engineering which designed and built off road racing trucks in the 80's and 90's. The concept of CADL was formed in 2008 and the company formally started in 2010.  The vision is to reintroduce affordable aviation at a grassroots level to new and experienced builders of aircraft, offering either scratch-built plans, or complete kits. In 2012 Malcolm unveiled his Cubflyer Education Programme at Oshkosh.  (see http://www.aviationnews.co.nz/news/10/28/The-Cub-inspiration/). This programme is centred around the building of the Adventurer CA18 aircraft over a three year period within High Schools.  This full size reproduction is of a Piper Cub PA 18 but constructed mainly from timber.
The prototype is classified as an amateur built aircraft.  There are three models in the CA18 series ranging from microlight class to full weight amateur built aircraft.
The CA18-1530-C200 was registered as ZK-CMR in July to Malcolm Savill of Hamilton.'
 ZK-MBS (c/n 1275) is a SOCATA TB10 Tobago.
Of French design and build - this one actually was imported from the States to be registered to the Massey University School of Aviation at Palmerston North on 04-04-1995.
It joined its 12th and current owner Chris Worrall of Waimauku on 27-03-2014.
 The Grumman G164A AgCat ZK-RTA2 is c/n 441.
It had an earlier agricultural career in Australia as VH-PUV2.
It came to NZ and was rebuilt at West Melton using major parts of c/n 530 (ex VH-CCS1) and became ZK-MEX on 29-08-1996 with Pioneer Adventures Ltd of Christchurch.
It has had a swag of owners until Challenge Aviation Ltd of Waitara took it over on 27-11-2004. They  re-registered it as ZK-RTA on 18-01-2005.
It moved to Tauranga in May of 2007 and on 01-05-2015 it was listed with Goodwin McKay Ltd.
This aptly registered Cessna 182T Skylane ZK-WYT (c/n 18281332) is a 2004 model which arrived recently in NZ to be registered to Peter Whyte of Auckland on 19-10-2016.

DH 104 Devon NZ1808/ZK-KTT Airborne at Tauranga 30-12-2016

It is great news that the New Zealand Historic Aircraft Trust's DH 104 Devon NZ1808/ZK-KTT (c/n 04324) took to the air again at Tauranga yesterday afternoon, after several years of restoration work.  And our man on the spot, the Hairy Mole Rat was there to capture the action.  Thanks very much for the great photos Peter.

 A smoky start up!

 Lift off.

Gear coming up.

And climb out - looking great.

Then taxying back after a 25 minute flight.

Congratulations to all involved.

The previous history of this aircraft has been well covered in a previous blog post by Blue Bus at: http://nzcivair.blogspot.co.nz/2016/05/zk-ktt-at-tauranga-today.html

Question time # 192 resolved

Yep - resolved to my satisfaction.
It is a wind driven generator mounted on the roof of a De Havilland DH84 Dragon.
Below is a photo from the Ed Coates collection showing both ZK-ADR and ZK-ADS in East Coast Airways markings.
No generators at this point.
ZK-ADR c/n 6090 was first registered with East Coast Airways Ltd of Gisborne and first flew on 25-03-1935.
It was re-registered as ZK-AER to Union Airways Ltd on 01-07-1938 and is seen below (minus spats) with sister DH84 ZK-ADS at Milson about 1939

It was impressed into the RNZAF on 25-10-1939 and became NZ551
It was damaged landing at Rongotai in 1943 and sold to Air Travel (NZ) Ltd.
It was rebuilt by De Havilland at Rongotai and re-registered as ZK-AHT on 25-03-1944.
It crashed on Mount Hope on 30-06-1944.
Below is a link to a seat from this aircraft as seen in a Murchison museum.

Question time # 192

I posted this pic a couple of weeks ago.

It has now become Question time # 192
I need an urgent correct reply as the chocolate fish for the winner is sitting here in front of me and is ever so tempting.
What is it ?
Where on this aircraft was it mounted ?
Then tell me what aircraft type/model it is on.
And to cap it all off - give me a likely ZK registration for this aircraft.

TL 2000 Sting S4 ZK-MTN Out and About

The Stephen MacIntyre Robinson R44 Raven II ZK-HOY2  (c/n 11565) is Tauranga based.

Other Aerial Activity Around Auckland Harbour

While at Mission Bay yesterday we spied some unusual shaped silhouettes in the sky up on Bastion Point

It turned out to be a flying pig!

and there was also a flying dragon.

Aerial if not Civil, but I thought they were cute none-the-less.

Kiwis working abroad

Steve Bunting has recently visited American Samoa and has kindly provided shots of three working Kiwi's. The three float equipped Robinson R44's are owned and operated by Wanaka-based Western Pacific Helicopters Ltd who have been providing aerial platforms for tuna-spotting operations across the Pacific.

DHC 2 Beaver Floatplane on Auckland Harbour 27-12-2016

As I previously posted, we were fortunate to be at a nice vantage point when Auckland Seaplanes DHC 2 beaver floatplane ZK-AMA2 made an approach and water landing adjacent to the Ovation of the Seas cruise liner which was anchored in the harbour.

 Approach past Stanley Point.

It still feels like Christmas with the Pohutukawas in bloom.

 Turning into wind.

 Touch down.

 and slowing down.

 Taxying past Westhaven Marina.

and past The Ovation of the Seas.

to its base opposite the Viaduct Events Centre.

Best of Pauanui for 27-12-2016

Six shots from Richard Currie as taken at Pauanui 27-12-2016.
The US registered Cessna 172S N510LP (c/n 172S9510) is still currently listed with Southern Cross Aviation LLC of Parker, Arizona.
It has been in Country for some time now.
See Here
The Piper PA-22-135/180 TriPacer/Pacer ZK-PAL3 (c/n 22-2298) was created in 1954 but didn't enter the NZ civil register until 23-10-2014 with Tail Dragger Classics Ltd at Ardmore.
It first flew in ZK marks from Ardmore on 04-02-2015 and was transferred to Ardmore Taildraggers Inc on 07-06-2015.
As can be seen it has been converted to tail wheel configuration and if the label on the cowl is true - then it has a 180 hp engine.
This is the nicest shot I have seem of the Dyn'Aero MCR 4S ZK-PSA (c/n 104).
It is the labour of love of Peter S Armstrong - first flying on 27-07-2011.
The Tecnam P92 Super Echo ZK-TES (c/n 720) is Michael Gordon's, over from Tauranga.
And the Thames based Yakovlev Yak-52 ZK-YXO (c/n 877413) of Read Brothers Hardware entered our register on 03-11-2004.
The Robinson R44 Raven I ZK-IVS (c/n 1866) spent fifteen months on the UK register before being listed here with Heliflite Pacific Ltd on 31-07-2009.
Current owner is Helicom NZ Ltd of Whangamata.
